CRUEL WORLD GRAPHICOMIX No. 1: The Mirth and the Mayhem (Teat Horn Entertainment 1993)
I acquired a large lot of books that were the former property of Peter Bagge, many were very clearly artists submissions while he was editor at Weirdo & Fantagraphics as some have little notes and original sketches included, and others later went on get published by Weirdo / Fantagraphics and I know these guys worked on books together, most well known (to me at lest), Blanchard inked later issues of Bagge's famed Hate series.
"Comic book savagely illustrated by Jim Blanchard, with contributing writers John Trubee, Zoogz Rift, and George Petros."
40 pgs. 8.5 x 11 inches. Full color card stock cover with b&w interior. Self-published. Limited to 2000 copies.
About the artist:
Blanchard's work is often twisted, mutated and ultimately sickly gorgeous, with a pervasive psychedelic tone. Heavily influenced by such underground greats as Robert Williams and Victor Moscoso, Blanchard fuses meticulous craftsmanship with a pop underground sensibility to produce some of the most vivid and striking cartoon art in the world.
Jim Blanchard (Visual Abuse), a comic artist and illustrator, worked for Fantagraphics as an art director in the 1990s and as an inker for Peter Bagge’s Hate series.
"Blanchard's images are a total visual overload, an all-consuming, mind-subsuming onslaught of pictorial intensity where freewheeling cultural subversion, social malevolence, aesthetic anarchy, and libidinal excess comes hurtling out at us, naked, hard, deranged, bloody, screaming, and armed to the nines. When Blanchard picks up his pen, you'd best duck." — Carlo McCormick
